Meaning
不 is the primary negative particle in Mandarin Chinese, used to negate verbs, adjectives, and other elements in a sentence. It is one of the most fundamental and frequently used words in the language, essential for forming negative statements in the present and future tenses.
Usage
不 is placed directly before the verb or adjective it negates. Its tone changes from fourth tone (bù) to second tone (bú) when followed by another fourth-tone syllable, though this is often not reflected in pinyin writing. Note that 不 is NOT used to negate the verb 有 (to have); use 没 instead. It expresses general negation, habitual actions, or future intentions.
